So i stopped in at a place called Gandolfos a while ago in the am ’cause I was hungry and i rarely eat breakfast in the morning. I know I should, my wife tells me so all the time. One of these days I might listen. I’m trying – really I am. I ate some grape nuts 2 or 3 times this week which is probably a record for me. Anyway, I ordered this egg sandwich deal with cheese and sausage. This is not something I would normally order. I generally dislike things like egg mcmuffins, big macs, woppers and the establishments where you can buy such things. For some reason at a sub sandwich shop that day it sounded good. It was delightful. Served on a soft crossaint type roll, nice and hot and just a little bit of spiceyness to it. So I’m telling my wife, “you should try this sandwich it’s pretty good.” She’s not interested.

So one day I decide I’ll make her my own version. I cruise down to the corner and grab the grocery goods and whip it up. I’m confident that I will impress. She eats a few bites and says “You know, it’s pretty good but I think it would be better without the sausage and on an english muffin – slightly toasted – instead of this roll thing.” Blasphemy! “The soft roll thing is what makes it good” I tell her. She insists, english muffin, slightly toasted.

“English Muffin!?” I say, “What is that? Who eats English muffins? Not I. If I make it with an english muffin I may as well wear a turtle neck, sip coffee and read poetry with my legs crossed, wrist bent and pinky out!” Still, she does not falter and brings home english muffins the next time she goes to get groceries. Next morning, I make my own sandwich with the wonderful soft roll and, because I love her, prepare one for my wife with the english muffin she adores so much – no sausage. As usual it was a wonderful breakfast sandwich. Stacie also enjoys hers very much and insists that I at least try it with an english muffin. So, after much resistance I took a bite of hers.

It was Glorious!

I was immediately converted to her way of thinking. The Gandolfo’s restaurant was on the verge of excellence, but they fell short. The local location has since closed. Due to the lack of an english muffin on the menu perhaps? I will never know, but i have recently eaten at another restaurant of the franchise only to be disappointed. The english muffin version – slightly toasted – with or without sausage is by far the best in my opinion. Maybe not the healthiest breakfast, but all things in moderation right?

Coincidentally, i was telling this story in short form to my brother the other day while walking through the grocery store. Of course, I needed to buy english muffins and he laughed at me  and mockingly asked, “Dude, you eat english muffins?” I schooled him on the subject. Just as I was telling him the part where I said, ‘I may as well wear a turtle neck and sip coffee and read poetry,’ I looked up and there was a lady in front of me (also grabbing some english muffins off the shelf) wearing a turtle neck. I felt remorseful about my wreckless comments in front of others, but i was looking forward to another good sandwich and I have good reason to beleive that lady was as well.
